Deep beneath the ruins of Angband, the Iron Hell of the First Age, Morgoth Bauglir sits upon his subterranean throne of black adamant, crowned with three burning Silmarils. As a valiant adventurer seeking glory, vengeance, or boundless treasure, you begin your journey in the frontier town above.
Angband 3D combines the deep, turn-based roguelike mechanics of the venerable Angband 4.2.6 C engine with a modern, immersive first-person 3D dungeon crawler viewport. The world operates in true turn-based time: nothing moves until you decide to take an action.
- • 100 Procedural Dungeon Depths (5000ft): Each dungeon floor is procedurally generated with winding corridors, monster vaults, and secret treasure caches.
- • Instant 3D Camera Turning: Turning your camera left or right costs zero engine turns, allowing you to freely look around corners and inspect threats without advancing game time.
- • Seamless CRT Terminal Integration: Switch between the 3D first-person world and the classic 80x24 roguelike CRT terminal at any time by pressing Tab.
Angband 3D represents a groundbreaking synthesis of traditional roguelike depth and modern 3D dungeon crawling:
- • Authoritative Headless C Engine: Game logic, monster AI, RNG, and world generation run strictly on upstream Angband 4.2.6 C code with zero gameplay divergence.
- • First-Person Viewmodel Hands & Weapon Rigs: Dynamic articulated hands, weapons, shields, books, and torches that naturally adapt to your character's race and physical height.
- • Zero-Turn Camera Yaw Navigation: Looking around corners or rotating 360° is client-side and consumes 0 game turns, preserving pure tactical turn-based decisions.
- • Ethereal Monster Sensing in 3D: Monsters detected through spells, telepathy, or infra-vision in pitch black corridors are depicted with a glowing misty apparition aura and sensory beacon.
- • Universal Save Game Portability: 1-click downloads of your `.sav` character, drag-and-drop save uploads, in-game pause menu exports, and 100% interoperability with desktop Godot.
- • Dual-Engine Architecture (Local & Cloud): Seamlessly play locally via high-speed process stdio or connect to the Google Cloud Run WebSocket relay with live latency telemetry.
- • Procedural Subterranean Illumination: Dynamic torch falloff, molten lava emissive shaders with line-of-sight gating, and deterministic corridor sconces.
- • Real-Time Combat Message Streaming: Top-mounted action banner and landscape HUD feed with turn-by-turn combat damage, status alerts, and full scrollback history.
- • Interactive Contextual Action Bars: Dynamic touch and hotkey item selection pills for throwing, casting, quaffing potions, reading scrolls, and shop interactions.

Angband is an unforgiving permadeath roguelike. Mastering these veteran principles will turn mortal perils into triumphant dives:
- • Corridor Funneling (The Golden Rule): Never fight multiple monsters in open rooms where they can surround you! Retreat into a 1-tile wide corridor so foes are forced to engage you strictly one at a time.
- • Speed is King: In Angband, speed is multiplicative. At +10 speed you act twice as fast as normal monsters; at +20 you take three actions. Prioritize Boots of Speed, Rings of Speed, and Potions of Speed above all other gear.
- • Emergency Escapes (Have an Exit Plan): Always keep at least 5 Scrolls of Phase Door and 3 Scrolls of Teleportation in your pack. Fleeing at 25% HP is standard tactical play, not cowardice!
- • Light is Life: Subterranean corridors are pitch black. Unlit tiles prevent you from spotting approaching horrors and conceal lethal breath ambushes. Always stock extra torches, lanterns, and flasks of oil.
- • Pre-emptive Detection: Before opening closed doors or exploring vaults, always cast Detect Monsters, Detect Invisible, or Detect Evil. Sensed creatures will glow with a misty ethereal apparition in 3D.
- • Stair Scumming & Level Feelings: The engine evaluates each dungeon floor's danger and loot upon entry. If your feeling is ominous and you lack supplies, retreat immediately up the stairs! If your feeling is superb, hunt for the vault.
- • Stat Draining Recovery: Undead creatures (wights, wraiths, vampires) permanently drain Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity. Always carry Potions of Restore Strength and Restore Life Levels purchased from the Alchemy Shop.
- • Safe Resting Protocols: When low on HP or Mana, never rest in open corridors. Retreat to a dead-end room, close the door behind you, and use R or # to recover.
- • Word of Recall Timing: Scrolls of Word of Recall take 15 to 25 turns to activate before teleporting you between Town and the Dungeon. Cast it while still healthy in a safe corridor before you run out of healing!
- • STR (Strength): Determines melee attack damage, number of blows per round, and carrying weight capacity.
- • INT (Intelligence): Primary casting stat for Mages and Rangers. Governs spell success chance, mana reserves, and magical devices.
- • WIS (Wisdom): Primary casting stat for Priests and Paladins. Governs prayer success, divine mana, and saving throws.
- • DEX (Dexterity): Adds Armor Class bonuses, improves hit accuracy, enables dodging, and grants extra attacks.
- • CON (Constitution): Determines your Maximum Hit Points (HP) and resistance to stunning and physical shock.
- • Magic Disciplines: Sorcery, Elemental Magic, and Holy Invocations offer devastating fireballs, ice storms, healing rays, and magical detections.
